Since 2006, the Narconon Riverbend Retreat has been providing workable and effective drug addiction treatment solutions to the people of Louisiana and the South. The program is recognized as being among the best in the region, with an astonishing success rate of 75 percent of graduates remaining drug-free. The founders of the Riverbend center made the decision to help drug addicts after they observed some of the many people who were deprived of their next fix in the aftermath of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Seeing the overpowering effects of drug withdrawals in action, the founders realized they had to do something to help people in the community to find a way to quit drugs, they chose the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program based on its long history of success over the past 40 years, and have gained recognition for helping people recover from drug addiction ever since.
According to their web-site, Narconon Riverbend is located in Denham Springs, just outside Baton Rouge, the state capital. The program helps to fill an important role in the state, given Louisiana’s serious problems with drug abuse and addiction. It is estimated that nearly 207,000 Louisianans consume marijuana, along with nearly 34,000 people addicted to cocaine, more than 1,900 heroin addicts and a staggering 90,000 people abusing prescription drugs such as the opiate painkillers Vicodin and OxyContin.
About the Narconon Riverbend Facility
The Narconon Riverbend center is located in a quiet and serene residential setting, situated on 15 acres of heavily wooded countryside. When they are not participating in program activities, students (as the patients of the Narconon program are referred to) can relax and unwind on walks through the forest, by sitting and reading or talking with friends on the back patio, swimming or taking advantage of the many other amenities that the center has to offer. While this results-oriented rehab center is not a spa resort, they do still offer opportunities to rest, feel at home and enjoy the tranquil setting while they make progress on their road to recovery. The facility is equipped to serve as many as 35 students at a time, with 23 staff members, including 8 certified drug counselors. All the staff work closely together to provide students with a comfortable and supportive environment where they can transition from their lives as addicts and back into the happy, stable and productive people that they once were.
What Makes Narconon Riverbend Different
Unlike many addiction recovery programs, Narconon does not embrace the disease model of addiction. It also does not share the idea common to many 12-step programs, namely that an addict is powerless to do anything about his or her condition and must simply learn to cope with and manage it. Instead, Narconon helps students to address addiction as both a physical and a mental program, and by doing so it achieves excellent results. One aspect of the program involves ridding the body of the accumulated toxic residues caused by drug use, through a regimen of moderate exercise, healthy diet, nutritional supplements and sweating in a dry heat sauna. It has been found that these residues are to a large degree responsible for the cravings that often lead to relapse. In addition to this, students work on life skills courses that serve to bolster their abilities to confront people and situations, to be stable and confident in life and to stand up to the stress and pressures that drove them towards drugs in the first place. It is this combined approach that is largely responsible for the outstanding success that is routine at Narconon Riverbend.
